Ranking Member Thompson Statement on Trump’s Joint Address
(WASHINGTON) – Today, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, released the below statement on President Trump’s joint address to Congress:
“What we heard tonight was nothing more than the usual stream of endless lies and performative whining from a wannabe authoritarian. The American people can see right through it.
“But I’m more concerned about what Trump didn’t tell the American people tonight. He didn’t tell the American people that he is letting Elon Musk illegally dismantle the Federal government and mass fire hundreds – including veterans – from the Department of Homeland Security who keep us safe every day.
“He didn’t tell the American people that he is abandoning our longtime allies and weakening our cyber posture in order to please dictators like Vladimir Putin and cozy up to China. He didn’t tell the American people that he diverted investigations away from terrorism and trafficking to focus on his mass deportation agenda. And he didn’t tell the American people that he released hundreds of violent criminals back on our streets and is trying to the rewrite the history of January 6.
“One thing is clear, Trump can play a strongman on TV, but he is making the country weaker – and less safe – each and every day.”
